Why study Creative iMedia?

The Cambridge Nationals in Creative iMedia will equip pupils with a range of creative media skills and provide opportunities to develop, in context, desirable, transferable skills such as research, planning, and review, working with others and communicating creative concepts effectively. Through the use of these skills, learners will ultimately be creating fit-for-purpose creative media products. The Cambridge Nationals in Creative iMedia will also challenge all pupils, including high attaining learners, by introducing them to demanding material and techniques; encouraging independence and creativity and providing tasks that engage with the most taxing aspects of the National Curriculum.

How will I study Creative iMedia?

  • Understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of digital media including factors that influence product design, use of media codes and conventions, pre-production planning techniques, legal issues and creation/publishing, distribution considerations.
  • Develop learning and practical skills that can be applied to real-life contexts and work situations.
  • Think creatively, innovatively, analytically, logically and critically.
  • Develop independence and confidence in using skills that would be relevant to the media industry and more widely.
  • Design, plan, create and review digital media products which are fit for purpose meeting both client and target audience requirements.

What will I study at KS3

In readiness to complete this qualification at Key Stage 4, the core skills and subject knowledge content from Key Stage 3 computing forms the foundation for further study of Creative iMedia exclusively at Key Stage 4.

What will I study at KS4

OCR Level 1/Level 2 Cambridge National in Creative iMedia develops pupils’ understanding of IT skills through the development of creative products to solve creative media industry problems. Taking this qualification will prepare pupils for a career in the creative media sector. Learners will understand and develop tools, techniques, methods in creating digital media products; knowledge and use of hardware and software applications; to create interactive products for a range of scenarios whilst understanding risks, legal moral, ethical and security issues.

Assessment

Examination Board: OCR

Students must complete three units:

  • One externally assessed unit (examination)
  • Two centre-assessed units (NEA)
  • R093 – Mandatory examined assessment: Creative iMedia in the media industry. This is assessed through a formal examination.
  • R094 – Mandatory NEA unit: Visual identity and digital graphics. This is assessed by completing a set assignment.
  • R097 – Optional NEA unit: Interactive digital media. This is assessed by completing a set assignment.

Unit R093: Creative iMedia in the Media Industry M

In this unit you will learn about the media industry, digital media products, how they are planned, and the media codes which are used to convey meaning, create impact and engage audiences.

Unit R094: Visual Identity and Digital Graphics M

This is assessed by completing a set assignment. In this unit you will learn to how to develop visual identities for clients and use the concepts of graphic design to create original digital graphics to engage target audiences.

Unit R097: Interactive Digital Media O

This is assessed by completing a set assignment. In this unit you will learn how to plan, create and review interactive digital media products.

Careers

Pupils who study Creative iMedia could work in TV and radio, on stage or behind the scenes. You could produce books, magazines and websites. Or create art and other objects. Competition is fierce. Many people start out working for free to get the experience that employers are looking for. If you are creative or artistic, enjoy performing, producing things, writing or designing, a career in creative and media could be for you. Talent is important if you want to work in this area, but hard work is essential.
